Top Restaurant Tips To Managing Schedules

How do restaurants keep to a schedule on popular holidays. People call in advance to make reservations but how do restaurants insure their patrons finish on time? The best restaurants have scheduling down to a science to get their patrons out the door with-out feeling rushed.

The servicescape has a huge impact on how long people will stay at a restaurant. Making the restaurants uncomfortable in small ways will make patrons leave sooner. This has to be subtle or else the clientele will not return. A few subtle ways are as follows: Keeping the tempter cold, have a crowded dining area, and uncomfortable seating. Cold temperatures have been said to be done because the wait staff are over heated running around. However this is also in place to make customers slightly uncomfortable. They can complain however the temperature cannot be changed fast enough while same patrons are there. Thus customers will want to leave sooner but not feel as though this is a huge problem. Crowded dinning produces a louder environment which can make groups of people uncomfortable. People want to be able to talk to each other. After they finish their meal they will leave sooner to continue on their conversations. Crowded servicescaps with a lot of furniture and people make customers feel as though the restaurant is busy and they need to get out of the way. This gets people to leave earlier but not feel rushed as if they decided not that the restaurant decided. Uncomfortable such as backless seats also gets people to leave sooner to a more comfortable area, however this does not prevent the customer to enjoy the time that they have at the restaurant. The servicescape truly matter getting people to not over stay their welcome.

Monitoring the restaurant’s patrons is also very important to keep to a schedule. Start to notice which tables are more desirable. This can be do to size, comfort, or even location. Knowing the popular seating areas is important to get those tables out first. Restaurant’s will put out the food of the popular tables before the other tables regardless of when the orders came in. Having the food out sooner will get the best tables out first this keeps to a schedule and more happy patrons. Another way to monitor the customers is by their orders. If a group comes in make sure to keep their order on track to not get behind. What they order is also important, those who order wine will stay longer so they need their food out faster to get them out faster. Keeping customers occupied will make wait times seem shorter. Restaurants tell their customers a time so that they can see an end in sight, even though the time is not always accurate. Restaurants keep their customers occupied by bringing them to the bar with free drinks. Customers may even stay and have their meal at the bar freeing up more tables. Restaurants entice lingering customers as well to the bar by offering free desert at the bar if they are willing to move. Restaurants try to keep the flow going so that no one feels the wait, or feel a shorter wait.

ACAI BOWLS: THE NEW WAVE?

This week I wanted to talk about a food trend that has taken over the internet. This year, a delicious food by the name of “Acai Bowls” have been the new craze. But what exactly are Acai Bowls, are there different types, and where the heck did they come from? All of your most desired questions will be answered…right here…right NOW.

So, let’s start with the “where they came from” question. After doing some research, I found that Acai Bowls originated from Brazil. Acai is a type of fruit that grows well in the areas of Central and South America, but primarily is found in Brazil’s Amazon Rainforest (Expectmore, 2016). The fruit is high in antioxidants, and is extremely delicious!

So now that we know where Acai comes from, and where these yummy bowls began, let’s talk about what an Acai Bowl actually IS. There are any different types of Acai Bowls, made of different mixtures of bases, fruits, nuts, seeds, and more. But, one thing most Acai Bowls have in common, is that they are a mixture of different fruits, almost like a smoothie, but in a thicker consistency. Most acai bowls contain fruits like: bananas, strawberries, and blueberries. Often times, the acai is blended with additional fruits to give a more fruity flavor, while also having the same or different fruits to garnish the top of the bowl. Many people like to add peanut butter, coconut flakes, chia seeds, granola, and other garnishes to the top of their Acai Bowl to complete the flavor, while also packing in the nutrients.

Acai Bowls are made differently by those making them. There is no “right” or “wrong” Acai Bowl. To show you how different Acai Bowls can look I have attached a few pictures below. ALL are Acai Bowls, just made with different ingredients.

Acai Bowls are commonly sold in stores that make smoothies. There are also new stores constantly popping up that specialize in making Acai Bowls. Google around your area, and find one of these delicious spots, and give this new food wave a try!

Coffee, Coffee, COFFEE Galore

Coffee is one of my favorite things on this Earth. Not only does it give me my extra boost of energy every morning, it also tastes delicious, and can be made in so many different ways. Many people don’t know the different ways coffee can be made, so they resort to basic options like: a plain black hot coffee, iced coffee with cream, and other options much like these. However, there are a multitude of ways coffee can be prepared– all of which have different tastes, forms, and ingredients.

This week, I wanted to educate all of you on the many coffee drinks available. That way, the next time you walk into your local coffee shop or Starbucks, you’ll know what the heck is what. This post will also allow you to broaden your taste buds, and find the coffee style that suits you and your lifestyle the best!

Let’s start with the basics, and work our way up.

  1. Black Coffee: Just like it sounds, this drink is pure coffee with no additions. It can be served hot or iced. This drink is for those who love the taste of coffee, and don’t need any additions.
  2. Cafe Americano: Americanos are created with espresso and water. They are fairly strong drinks that will definitely give you the boost of energy you need. The water is mixed with the espresso to dilute it a little bit. They can also be served hot or iced.
  3. Cafe Latte: Latte’s are delicious! They are made of a mixture of espresso and milk. They’re a great option for people that enjoy the coffee flavor, but need that extra “uumph.” They are great hot or iced!
  4. Espresso Shot: An espresso shot is simply a small “shot” of espresso. Just like the name implies. They are incredibly strong, but go down quickly, and give a lot of energy.
  5. Cappuccino: This drink is another great option for people that enjoy coffee, but need something added. They are made with steamed milk, espresso, and “foam.”
  6. Macchiato: Macchiato’s are great for a large energy boost. They are made with a mixture of espresso and foam from milk. They are delicious hot or iced, and are for sure a fan fave!
  7. Cafe Mocha: These are so yummy if you love chocolate! Mochas are made of espresso, steamed milk, and a little bit of chocolate. They are great for energy, but also for their excellent taste!

A Coffee Drink Field Guide

I hope I have prepared you for all of your future coffee endeavors. Coffee is an amazing drink that is enjoyed by so many people each and every day. I challenge you to explore the multitude of coffee “types” and find what you like the best. Coffee shouldn’t intimidate you by it’s many forms, but should excite you for new and different tastes. What’s Your Favorite Pasta Shell/Noodle?

The popularity for pasta in America saw a significant boost during the 20th century. As Americans became obsessed with pasta it became very popular and a common item on restaurant menus throughout the United States. Part of this pasta craze was led by a large group of immigrants that relocated to America from Italy in the late 19th century/early 20th century.

Pasta is a general term that refers to all different types of noodles/shells. It is typically made from unleavened dough or a durum wheat flour mixed with water or eggs, and formed into shapes, then cooked by boiling or baking. Pasta is divided into two broad categories fresh and dried. Right now there are approximately 350 different types of Pasta out there. Each pasta shell varies in thickness, size, and texture. Therefore, different pasta shells are used for different meals.

In this blog we will be looking at a variety of different pasta shells/noodles:

Pappardelle

Pappardelle

Pappardelle pasta is a thicker pasta that is generally consumed with hearty meat sauces or with a creamy alfredo sauce. People have commonly referred to this noodle as a thicker fettuccini noodle.

Farfalle “Bow Tie”

Bow Tie Pasta

Farfalle is the Italian word for butterfly. However, Americans generally refer to farfalle pasta as bow tie pasta. This pasta works well for a cold pasta salad or in a warm bowl with meats and veggies. Bow Tie pasta is my favorite pasta and is what my mom used to always make for me when I was a kid.

Shells

Pasta Shells

May of you will see this type of shell and instantly think of Velveeta Mac and Cheese just like me. Shells are the “utility player” of the pasta game. Depending on the size they can be used for a variety different things. Large shells are usually stuffed and baked with dishes such as manicotti. Medium shells can be used for different types of casseroles. The small shells can be used for mac and cheese (Velveeta) or in soups and stews.

Lasagna

Lasagna

The name is pretty self explanatory on what it is used for. Lasagna noodles are made specifically for Lasagna. Lasagna is a very popular Italian dish accompanied by meats, sauce, and cheese.

Fusilli

Fusilli

This pasta is commonly referred to people as the “corkscrew pasta”. It is a thick and long spiral shape and taste great with any type of sauce, but especially a meat sauce. The spirals/twist hold onto the meaty sauce giving each bite a lot of flavor.

Spaghetti

Spaghetti

Spaghetti noodles are the most commonly used pasta throughout the world. This is combined with any meat, sauce, or veggies. Spaghetti is very easy to make and is an easy go to dish if you don’t have much time to cook.

Penne

Penne

These are the small cylinder pasta that you see. Penne pasta comes in a variety of different flavors. Some flavors that penne pasta is available in is egg, tomato, and spinach. This pasta works really well for pasta salads, but can be used for a simple pasta dish too.

Tortellini

Tortellini

Like Penne Pasta, tortellini pasta comes in a variety of different flavors such as egg, tomato, and spinach. Inside the tortellini is generally cheese or meat, but sometimes both combined.

Ravioli

Ravioli

Ravioli is another popular pasta noodle. For me ravioli is my MVP. A simple delicious meal that fills me up. Like tortellini noodles, ravioli “pillows” are filled with cheese or meat, and sometimes both. Ravioli can also be served with any type of sauce.

PIZZA PIZZA PIZZA

Pizza is fan favorite all across America, and probably the world, too! Pizzas comes in many styles and are famous for being from certain areas in the country, such as Chicago and New York. You can’t forget where it all started, Italy! We’ll be digging in to some of the more widely known pizza styles in America.

One type of pizza that tends to stay the same across each state is fast food chain pizza. For example, Dominos. Dominos is personally my favorite chain pizza. They serve the traditional hand tossed and thin crust pizza. My absolute FAVORITE type of pizza from Dominos is their Hand-made Pan pizza. It is a thicker type crust, but it’s light and fluffy. For my fellow anti pizza crust fans, this pizza is perfect for you! It lacks the crust that most pizzas have. If you haven’t tried it yet, TRY IT TODAY.

Flatbread pizza is common at many restaurants. Usually served on the appetizer menu, and often found in restaurants that do not specialize in pizza. Flatbread is a healthier pizza alternative that is lighter in sauce and toppings compared to other pizza. If you prefer your pizza extra crispy, this is the pizza for you.

Neapolitan crust pizza is the traditional Italian pizza, and probably the closest us Americans can get to an authentic Italian pizza. The crust is thicker, but still light and airy. This pizza has limited toppings, meaning you can’t americanize it. Traditional tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and basil are what make this pizza authentic.

If you have ever visited Chicago, you’ve probably tried their deep dish pizza. If you didn’t, why?! This spring break I am traveling to Chicago and this pizza is on my to-eat list. This pizza is more like a pie from the way the crust forms. It is usually a couple of inches thick and holds in all the yumminess. The unusual thing for this pizza is that it gets layered a little differently than most pizza. First goes the cheese, then the meat and veggies, and last comes the sauce. If you’ve had Chicago deep dish, you understand the hype.

New York style pizza is known for it’s largeness. The slices are HUGE and most people only need one slice to satisfy their hunger. It’s crust is typically hand tossed and on the thinner side. It’s base is tomato sauce and mozzarella and topped with anything you desire! When in New York, pizzerias are everywhere. Our most recent visit to Big Pie in the Sky reminded me of New York style pizza. (Stay tuned for our review!)

Tex-Mex V.S. Traditional Mexican Food

Mexican vs. Tex Mex

Tex-Mex and Traditional Mexican food have their own history and flavors. What are the differences? Read today’s blog to learn more.

Traditional Mexican food has a long history. Mexican food has been thought to have derived from Mayan Indians. The Mayan Indians ate corn tortillas with bean past. In the 1300’s the Mayan Indians expanded their food to using: chili peppers, honey, salt, and chocolate. The next change came in 1521 when Spain invaded Mexico. They brought other foods, such as new livestock, new herbs, and spices. Traditional Mexican food continued to have grown in variety to what we see today.

Tex-Mex has an interesting history. The abbreviation, Tex-Mex came from Texas Mexican railroad. This abbreviation came about to describe the people who lived in Texas. Like most of the U.S. Native Americans lived in Texas for thousands of years. The European settlers came in the 1500’s and declared Texas as part of New Spain. In 1845 Texas became a state in the U.S.. Texas has a unique culture and many subcultures due to the different settlers. The mixing of cultures gave a new mix of cuisine known today as Tex-Mex.

Tex-Mex has grown further out from Texas to the rest of the country. This style of cooking is a whole different category of food than traditional Mexican cuisine with distinct differences. The key difference between the two styles of food are the ingredients. Tex-Mex food uses, beef, yellow cheese, wheat flour, black beans, caned vegetables and cumin. These ingredients are harder to find in Mexico therefor not used in traditional Mexican food. Out of the ingredients used in Tex-Mex cumin is the most interesting. Cumin is a spice that came from India. Tex-Mex has a lot of different culture’s food mixed in to create the unique style of food, separate from traditional Mexican food.

Prior to writing this blog I did not know the history of traditional Mexican food or Tex-Mex. The history of the two styles of food are interesting to me but also came to no surprise. I imagine that most food groups have changed and grown with people. People have found new ingredients to add with a growing plait. Food can also change when new cultures are introduced such as Spain’s food culture and India’s food culture. I do wonder the history of other food styles.

Living in the U.S. I have been mostly exposed to Tex-Mex food. Most of the restaurants I have been to with this style of food claim to be Mexican food. However After learning the difference in ingredients between the two styles I have come to relies that I have been mostly eating Tex-Mex. I enjoy elements of both though. I do like flour tortillas but I also like corn tortillas. Both styles are unique and delicious, I have enjoyed learning more and I hope you have learned some too! What’s the Scoop?
