GOING VEGETARIAN? MEALS, STORES, N MORE!

close-up photo of vegetable salad

So, based on the title, you can get a small gist of what I’m going to talk about. I have just recently decided to try going, “vegetarian.” There are numerous reasons people choose to be a vegetarian, so we’re gonna talk about those, some yummy recipes, health effects, and more. Some people choose to be vegetarian due to animal cruelty, and not thinking it’s right to treat animals the way we do. Others do it for dietary purposes; meat can be very tough and heavy on the stomach and can cause a lot of unknown health effects. But me, I’m doing it for a different reason, that honestly might sound a little silly to the average person.

Eating meat is something I always grew up doing. My mom made some sort of meat every single meal. However, around the age of 18 I just randomly started getting a little grossed-out by meat. Just thinking about where it was coming from, the chemicals being put into it, etc. all just kind of made me “turned-off” from eating it. The more I pondered where it came from, how the animals were treated, what they were fed, and so on, I grew almost a “disgust” for meat. The best advice I can give, is just DO YOUR RESEARCH. A lot of companies that claim animals are “grass-fed”, don’t use antibiotics, etc. are not telling the full truth. Often times “organic” isn’t even actually “organic.” Make sure you are feeding your body healthy nutrients that will energize you.

Another reason I am interested in trying to be vegetarian, is the energy I have heard you get. Your body is no longer fueled off of meat but is fueled by the other healthy foods you generally consume as a vegetarian. I have had plenty of people tell me that they feel so much healthier, more energized, and happier. It has also been said that people that only do not consume meat are actually much lighter in weight by almost 20 pounds on average. I have always been very into health, fitness, and keeping my body in shape, so this obviously has been a positive for me, as I am making the decision to cut meat out of my diet.

But what do you eat for meals if you are vegetarian? Where do you get the protein you need? These are two very relevant questions that you might need answered as you ponder whether to go vegetarian or not. Many vegetarians eat a lot of fruit, vegetables, starches, nuts, etc. There are a multitude of delicious cook books and online recipes that are strictly for the vegetarian life-style. One of my favorites, quick-and-easy meals is avocado toast with veggies on top. It takes only a few minutes to make, and is filling, delicious, and healthy. It’s made with toast, tomatoes, onion, avocado, lemon, siracha, salt, and pepper. Healthy fats like avocados, nuts, and other food items are a good way to fill yourself up. But what about protein? Where does that come from as a vegetarian? Well, there are many, many sources of protein that are not meat-based. Some popular food items are: edamame, chickpeas, eggs, tofu, peanuts, Quinoa, oats, soy milk, wild rice, and others. It is definitely important when eating a vegetarian diet to get enough protein per day, so that is something to take note of.

A great place to shop if you are vegetarian is “Trader Joe’s.” Trader Joe’s is filled with healthy, organic, vegetarian food items and pre-made meals. I have heard that they carry a lot of different vegetarian brands like, “Amy’s” and “MorningStar.” Amy’s has amazing pre-made meals that are both delicious and healthy. MorningStar has a wide-range of vegetarian versions of meat foods. For example, they have vegetarian chicken nuggets. Apparently, they taste so good you can’t even tell they’re vegetarian. Some people say they actually even taste BETTER than real, meat chicken nuggets. These two brands, and Trader Joe’s in general is a great place to look into if you’re going vegetarian and are concerned about limited options.

So, Food Friendzy, if you are interested in going vegetarian, I think it’s a great option. There are a multitude of health benefits (loss of weight, protection against chemicals and bacterium, etc.), delicious foods that taste authentic but are veggie-replicas, and it’s a way to protect our environment and the animals in it. Before you make the decision like I have, do your research, consult other vegetarians, and truly consider your reasoning for doing it. It honestly is a really big decision. It isn’t even JUST a decision, it’s a new way of life. Happy researching ❤

Sushi, Anyone?

I gave sushi a try for the first time when I was in middle school. My aunt has always been the one to get me to try odd new foods, so of course she was the culprit of my sushi addiction. The classic California Roll was my first sushi and needless to say I fell in love. As I got older I started expanding the types of sushi I would try. Raw sushi was the most difficult for me to give into but I am grateful I did. About a year ago a friend of mine introduced me to a new restaurant in Kennesaw, GA called Revolving Sushi Factory. I had seen places like this advertised on my Facebook timeline but never had the opportunity of visiting one. This restaurant set up is so cool, even if you don’t like sushi I would recommend going just for the experience. Plus they also serve other Asian cuisines such as ramen and desserts like mochi ice cream. You can sit at either a booth or a bar, where attached to them is a revolving sushi bar. The restaurant provides you with an assortment of different types of sushi constantly in rotation, free for you to grab. This concept attracted me by allowing me to physically see the sushi before blindly ordering. Another great feature is that each plate only comes with 3-4 pieces for a price of $2.25.

AMAZING.

So for those skeptical to trying new things, this restaurant allows you to sample different sushi, unlike other sushi restaurants where you order a role with around 8 pieces for price ranging from $7-$15. The quality of the sushi is exceptional given the relatively low price. I tried 5 different plates of sushi and my bill came out to be $11 before tip. For my fellow sushi advocates, I think we can agree this a steal. Aside from the revolving sushi bar you can also order from the menu via a tablet at your table. Once your food is prepared, a mini monorail type of device delivers it. All of the food options are reasonably priced. I find this important, as I am a college student who prefers to not break the bank for a nice meal.  The overall experience at this place is so twenty-first century. Since my first visit I have been hooked. If anyone wants to know where my paychecks go, it’s to Revolving Sushi.

Head over to our podcast to hear about the other Friendz go-to restaurants in Kennesaw!

Why You Should Go Gluten-Free

Gluten Free

There are an abundance of diets that are trending in 2019, as the health craze continues. One diet that has spiked is people cutting out gluten from there diet. You may notice when you walk through the grocery store or even browsing a restaurant menu, that companies are pushing these gluten free options as the demand grows. But why go gluten-free? So many people see this trend happening, but don’t fully understand the science of the decision.

There are people out there that have to go gluten-free, because of certain health reasons. However, there are people that are buying into the media/generally public word of going gluten free to lose weight, boost energy, or generally to just feel better.

Of course I don’t think going gluten-free is for everyone, but there is no harm to trying it. It can offer a range of benefits (ranges from person to person as everyone’s body reacts differently).

Benefits

According to Jeff Sanders, there are 10 benefits to going gluten-free:

  1. Improve cholesterol levels
  2. Promote digestive health
  3. Increases energy levels
  4. Eliminates unhealthy and processed foods from your diet (oils, fried food, breads, and desserts to name a few)
  5. More likely to eat fruits and vegetables because they are all gluten-free
  6. Reduces your risk of heart disease, certain cancers, and diabetes
  7. Helps ward off viruses and germs as many foods you will now eat will contain more antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals
  8. Promotes healthy weight-loss
  9. Improves health of people with irritable bowl syndrome and arthritis
  10. Distinctly improved awareness of foods that can have an adverse effect on your health

I personally have found that I feel better when I eat less gluten or none at all. However, I have never participated in a full exclusive gluten-free diet, but can only imagine how much better you will feel. I wish I had the will power to be able to participate in this diet long term.

Food, Friendz and….KETO

We have all heard about it, but what is the Ketogenic diet, and is it “legit?” The keto diet is today’s most controversial diet. It became a big fad when celebrities like Halle Berry, the Kardashians, Tim Tebow and other celebrities started praising about their lifestyle change and weight-loss with the diet. I am no expert by any means, or educated enough to speak on the risks that may come with the doing the keto diet, but I can attest that it does indeed work, and is pretty easy to follow.

Keto is a low carbohydrates/ high protein diet. By cutting drastically back on carb heavy foods you deprive your body of glusose; which is the main source of energy for body cells. So an alternative fuel called Ketones are produced from stored body fat. When Ketones accumulate in the blood your body goes into something called Ketosis. While getting into Ketosis and staying in it is the more complex part, it is essentially what helps your body pull stored glucose, and help lose stored fat.

When I first started the Keto diet a year ago I began only eating 20 carbs a day. While that may sound like a lot, one can of soda has about 54 grams of carbs, so only eating 30 was difficult. Eggs, bacon, cheese, cauliflower, lettuce and chicken became my new go to foods. I didn’t do strict keto, but more of what people call “lazy keto.” I never checked to see if I hit ketosis, however by cutting down mt carb intake I lost about 20lbs in a month and a half. I gave up drinking pop (or soda for you southern folks haha) and sugary drinks for no carb flavored waters and water with no carb powdered flavors added.

Diets are a hit or miss, some may work well for you and others you may only lose 2lbs. When people talk to me about wanting to lose weight I always suggest the Keto diet because it was successful and easy for me. Whether you are strict keto, or lazy keto cutting back on carbs will usually show some type of results to weight loss or inches dropped. Check out our recipe/ how to for one of my favorite easy keto meals.

ASMR & Food?

Image result for food asmr

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response otherwise known as ASMR has been one of the hottest trends on the internet. ASMR videos are videos of people making a various number of sounds and whispers, referred to as triggers, in order to stimulate a part of your brain in order to trigger a tingling sensation, in your brain/head and sometimes even down your spine. This sensation has been around since the beginning if time, but was officially coined by Jennifer Allen in 2010. Youtube has become the primary hub for these types of videos. You can seach for any type of ASMR triggers that you prefer the most and are almost guaranteed to find something, because as of 2015 “ASMR” gets more youtube searches than things such as “candy” and “chocolate” people or “ASMRtists” have taken notice of this trend and hundreds of ASMR videos are uploaded every week, there are currently 5.2 million videos currently on the site. These videos are made using binaural microphones to create a surround sound effect that, when you use headphones, creates the sensation that you are in the same room as that person.

Similar to a trend that started in South Korea called a Mukbang or broadcasted eating where the host of the video would eat an enormous amount of food and discuss it on camera, ASMRtists have begun to incorporate food into their videos. It initially started with triggers as simple as whispering and tapping on different objects, but because each and everyone of us is different, we can find the stimulation of ASMR in many different ways. Eating is just one example of the new triggers that have blown up in popularity. I personally don’t really care for the sound of somebody eating, but for some people the sound of the crunch into a nice juicy pickle or the crispy munch of a burger can be exactly what that person needs to get tingles. The list goes on and on with ASMRtists pushing the limits and experimenting with new triggers all the time, you can easily find ASMR videos or people eating veggies, sushi, fruit, fried food, snacks, you name it and there is probably a video of it. These videos are primarily targeting a very niche audience, but some of these ASMRtists have over a million subscribers to their channel. While this may be a strange concept for some to fully understand, these videos can sometimes be therapeutic to the listener and can provide a means of relaxation and good vibes.

While food ASMR may be one of the most popular and fastest growing genres of ASMR, there are many of different types of genres similar to having different types of music. Many people who are into ASMR claim that it helps them to unwind and has helped to combat things like anxiety and depression. If this sounds interesting to you, I recommend heading over to youtube to check it out, you might just find something you enjoy. Happy tingling!

What food would you do a food ASMR video to? Let us know in the comments below!

Orange Wine? Yes It Exists

Orange Wine

Orange Wine? Yes, this is a real thing and no it is not made from oranges. Believe it or not a lot of people actually ask that. When I saw this across my computer screen I did a double take and had to look more into this. I am not much of a wine drinker, but I love orange soda and a lot of orange flavored food and drinks.

But How?

Like me you are probably wondering, but how is the wine orange? I have seen white wine and the normal red wine. Well it is all in how the wine is made. Orange wine is made from vinifying white grapes (just like red wine), however instead of removing the skins after the grapes are pressed, the juice is fermented in contact with the skin. This is what supposedly gives the wine the orange color that you see.

Orange Wine Header

Some of you intense wine drinkers may think that this is exactly how rosé is made. Nope! However, close it is made almost the exact inverse of rosé. So instead of red grapes (which is used to make rosé, white grapes are used) white grapes are used and have increased skin contact.

Taste

People have compared orange wine to taste similar to cider. However, some people think it taste like a bolder white wine. It all depends on what orange wine you drink. Like all wine it has a huge spectrum of profiles. Other descriptors that are thrown around to describe the taste are: robust, bold, earthy, savory, and funky. They also tend to be dry and have a sourness to it. Many compare it to a fruity beer.

Top Orange Wine To Try

According to Real Simple, the top 4 orange wines you should try for the summer of 2019 are:

  1. Sicilian-based COS’s Pithos Bianco ($34, drizly.com) is nutty and has lots of soft, peachy flavor.
  2. Channing Daughters is a vineyard located in the Hamptons, and their Ramato Wine ($24, astorwines.com) has hints of honey, apricots and spices.
  3. Pheasant’s Tears makes their Rkatsiteli wine ($17, astorwines.com) in the country of Georgia. Its flavor has a “big, dense, fleshy style,” and has notes of honey, nuts and apple skin.
  4. Clot de l’Origine’s “l’Original” ($22, winehouse.com) is lightly spicy and highly approachable. This one has a more delicate style, complete with white flowers and orange marmalade.

Wine lovers go out and grab yourself a bottle of orange wine and comment below how you like it. If you have already enjoyed a glass of orange wine comment and below and let us know how you liked it!
