GOING VEGETARIAN? MEALS, STORES, N MORE!

close-up photo of vegetable salad

So, based on the title, you can get a small gist of what I’m going to talk about. I have just recently decided to try going, “vegetarian.” There are numerous reasons people choose to be a vegetarian, so we’re gonna talk about those, some yummy recipes, health effects, and more. Some people choose to be vegetarian due to animal cruelty, and not thinking it’s right to treat animals the way we do. Others do it for dietary purposes; meat can be very tough and heavy on the stomach and can cause a lot of unknown health effects. But me, I’m doing it for a different reason, that honestly might sound a little silly to the average person.

Eating meat is something I always grew up doing. My mom made some sort of meat every single meal. However, around the age of 18 I just randomly started getting a little grossed-out by meat. Just thinking about where it was coming from, the chemicals being put into it, etc. all just kind of made me “turned-off” from eating it. The more I pondered where it came from, how the animals were treated, what they were fed, and so on, I grew almost a “disgust” for meat. The best advice I can give, is just DO YOUR RESEARCH. A lot of companies that claim animals are “grass-fed”, don’t use antibiotics, etc. are not telling the full truth. Often times “organic” isn’t even actually “organic.” Make sure you are feeding your body healthy nutrients that will energize you.

Another reason I am interested in trying to be vegetarian, is the energy I have heard you get. Your body is no longer fueled off of meat but is fueled by the other healthy foods you generally consume as a vegetarian. I have had plenty of people tell me that they feel so much healthier, more energized, and happier. It has also been said that people that only do not consume meat are actually much lighter in weight by almost 20 pounds on average. I have always been very into health, fitness, and keeping my body in shape, so this obviously has been a positive for me, as I am making the decision to cut meat out of my diet.

But what do you eat for meals if you are vegetarian? Where do you get the protein you need? These are two very relevant questions that you might need answered as you ponder whether to go vegetarian or not. Many vegetarians eat a lot of fruit, vegetables, starches, nuts, etc. There are a multitude of delicious cook books and online recipes that are strictly for the vegetarian life-style. One of my favorites, quick-and-easy meals is avocado toast with veggies on top. It takes only a few minutes to make, and is filling, delicious, and healthy. It’s made with toast, tomatoes, onion, avocado, lemon, siracha, salt, and pepper. Healthy fats like avocados, nuts, and other food items are a good way to fill yourself up. But what about protein? Where does that come from as a vegetarian? Well, there are many, many sources of protein that are not meat-based. Some popular food items are: edamame, chickpeas, eggs, tofu, peanuts, Quinoa, oats, soy milk, wild rice, and others. It is definitely important when eating a vegetarian diet to get enough protein per day, so that is something to take note of.

A great place to shop if you are vegetarian is “Trader Joe’s.” Trader Joe’s is filled with healthy, organic, vegetarian food items and pre-made meals. I have heard that they carry a lot of different vegetarian brands like, “Amy’s” and “MorningStar.” Amy’s has amazing pre-made meals that are both delicious and healthy. MorningStar has a wide-range of vegetarian versions of meat foods. For example, they have vegetarian chicken nuggets. Apparently, they taste so good you can’t even tell they’re vegetarian. Some people say they actually even taste BETTER than real, meat chicken nuggets. These two brands, and Trader Joe’s in general is a great place to look into if you’re going vegetarian and are concerned about limited options.

So, Food Friendzy, if you are interested in going vegetarian, I think it’s a great option. There are a multitude of health benefits (loss of weight, protection against chemicals and bacterium, etc.), delicious foods that taste authentic but are veggie-replicas, and it’s a way to protect our environment and the animals in it. Before you make the decision like I have, do your research, consult other vegetarians, and truly consider your reasoning for doing it. It honestly is a really big decision. It isn’t even JUST a decision, it’s a new way of life. Happy researching ❤

ACAI BOWLS: THE NEW WAVE?

This week I wanted to talk about a food trend that has taken over the internet. This year, a delicious food by the name of “Acai Bowls” have been the new craze. But what exactly are Acai Bowls, are there different types, and where the heck did they come from? All of your most desired questions will be answered…right here…right NOW.

So, let’s start with the “where they came from” question. After doing some research, I found that Acai Bowls originated from Brazil. Acai is a type of fruit that grows well in the areas of Central and South America, but primarily is found in Brazil’s Amazon Rainforest (Expectmore, 2016). The fruit is high in antioxidants, and is extremely delicious!

So now that we know where Acai comes from, and where these yummy bowls began, let’s talk about what an Acai Bowl actually IS. There are any different types of Acai Bowls, made of different mixtures of bases, fruits, nuts, seeds, and more. But, one thing most Acai Bowls have in common, is that they are a mixture of different fruits, almost like a smoothie, but in a thicker consistency. Most acai bowls contain fruits like: bananas, strawberries, and blueberries. Often times, the acai is blended with additional fruits to give a more fruity flavor, while also having the same or different fruits to garnish the top of the bowl. Many people like to add peanut butter, coconut flakes, chia seeds, granola, and other garnishes to the top of their Acai Bowl to complete the flavor, while also packing in the nutrients.

Acai Bowls are made differently by those making them. There is no “right” or “wrong” Acai Bowl. To show you how different Acai Bowls can look I have attached a few pictures below. ALL are Acai Bowls, just made with different ingredients.

Acai Bowls are commonly sold in stores that make smoothies. There are also new stores constantly popping up that specialize in making Acai Bowls. Google around your area, and find one of these delicious spots, and give this new food wave a try!

Coffee, Coffee, COFFEE Galore

Coffee is one of my favorite things on this Earth. Not only does it give me my extra boost of energy every morning, it also tastes delicious, and can be made in so many different ways. Many people don’t know the different ways coffee can be made, so they resort to basic options like: a plain black hot coffee, iced coffee with cream, and other options much like these. However, there are a multitude of ways coffee can be prepared– all of which have different tastes, forms, and ingredients.

This week, I wanted to educate all of you on the many coffee drinks available. That way, the next time you walk into your local coffee shop or Starbucks, you’ll know what the heck is what. This post will also allow you to broaden your taste buds, and find the coffee style that suits you and your lifestyle the best!

Let’s start with the basics, and work our way up.

  1. Black Coffee: Just like it sounds, this drink is pure coffee with no additions. It can be served hot or iced. This drink is for those who love the taste of coffee, and don’t need any additions.
  2. Cafe Americano: Americanos are created with espresso and water. They are fairly strong drinks that will definitely give you the boost of energy you need. The water is mixed with the espresso to dilute it a little bit. They can also be served hot or iced.
  3. Cafe Latte: Latte’s are delicious! They are made of a mixture of espresso and milk. They’re a great option for people that enjoy the coffee flavor, but need that extra “uumph.” They are great hot or iced!
  4. Espresso Shot: An espresso shot is simply a small “shot” of espresso. Just like the name implies. They are incredibly strong, but go down quickly, and give a lot of energy.
  5. Cappuccino: This drink is another great option for people that enjoy coffee, but need something added. They are made with steamed milk, espresso, and “foam.”
  6. Macchiato: Macchiato’s are great for a large energy boost. They are made with a mixture of espresso and foam from milk. They are delicious hot or iced, and are for sure a fan fave!
  7. Cafe Mocha: These are so yummy if you love chocolate! Mochas are made of espresso, steamed milk, and a little bit of chocolate. They are great for energy, but also for their excellent taste!

A Coffee Drink Field Guide

I hope I have prepared you for all of your future coffee endeavors. Coffee is an amazing drink that is enjoyed by so many people each and every day. I challenge you to explore the multitude of coffee “types” and find what you like the best. Coffee shouldn’t intimidate you by it’s many forms, but should excite you for new and different tastes. I hope this guide sets you up for success. Drink it up, ladies and gentleman! Let the Friendz know what drinks you try, and which is your favorite. P.S. I love Macchiatos.
